02
What is the instructor's lineage?
Grand Master Ernesto Presas Sr. > Grand Master Oliver Garduce > Guro Jeff Estrada
03
Do I need experience to join?
None at all. Most students who walk through the door have never trained in any martial art before, and the all-levels format means beginners train alongside more experienced students — which accelerates learning. You don't need to be fit, athletic, or coordinated when you start; FMA builds those qualities over time. If you've trained in other martial arts, FMA will complement what you know. If you haven't, you'll find it one of the most accessible systems to pick up.
04
What do I need to bring to my first class?
Just athletic clothing, indoor shoes, and a water bottle. The academy provides loaner bastons (rattan training sticks) for beginners, so there's nothing to buy before your first visit. You'll fill out a short waiver form when you arrive. There's no uniform requirement and no pressure to purchase anything on the day. Wear clothes you can move in comfortably — that's genuinely all you need.
05
What equipment is required for training?
The primary piece of equipment is a pair of bastons — traditional rattan training sticks imported from the Philippines, available for purchase once you join. For edged weapons training, the academy uses Cold Steel rubber training knives and CSA-approved safety glasses. As you progress, padded sticks are used for contact sparring drills.
06
How old do I have to be?
Flow Martial Arts Academy offers classes to students aged 14 and up, with no upper age limit. Adults of all ages train regularly and often progress quickly because FMA relies on technique and timing rather than speed or raw athleticism. Many students begin in their 30s, 40s, and 70s and find the training both physically engaging and mentally stimulating. If you're wondering whether you're too old to start, the honest answer is no.
